Promoting growth and prosperity through the healing power of DESIGN.
Sometimes our passions and talents take us in a direction we would have never imagined. When we follow a spark in our hearts, a powerful flow of chance can begin. For Carol this is just what happened. Back in 2018, on a normal Sunday Carol was watching a show on PBS called ArtEffects, she was inspired by a nonprofit called Humble Design in Detroit. She watched as a little boy was introduced to his brand new bedroom after being homeless, his emotion was overwhelming. This is when Carol thought, “I could do this”.
Curative Grace is based around the fascinating psychology of interior design and how it can affect us in all aspects of our lives. Our atmosphere can greatly help us heal from traumatic events such as homelessness. In November they did just that at Curative Grace, partnering with Safe Embrace to help their first family. A young woman and her two daughters who had just moved into a small new home, they had only essentials and mattresses on the floor to sleep on. Interviewing the mom they asked about her wants and wishes for her new home, she couldn’t even answer because her trauma had overcome her life and the focus of survival. But the spirit they saw in this woman inspired the space they created for her and her daughters.
With generous donations and support from the community, they put up pictures, curtains, arranged furniture. This family would have a table to eat on for thanksgiving, a simple thing that will be cherished so deeply. The Reaction of this family to their new space was all the affirmation Carol and Kristen needed, the mother said she spent hours just walking back and forth from room to room in deep gratitude for her new home.
Curative Grace is bringing awareness and shining new light on the homeless issue in our community. There is a vast spectrum that people may not always see or understand, struggling because of mental illness or substance abuse. Many people who are also recovering from the 2008 housing bubble. This organization aims not just to help those that have moved through adversary but to keep them from ever facing such circumstances again. The homelessness issue has reformed since the 1920s, our nations need was more focused on food. Today that need is still there but there are many food banks and soup kitchens, thankfully. There is not enough shelter and being on the streets is a vast issue. Homeless people are forming communities, which create larger issues for our communities, digging into the side of rivers levees, taking shelter wherever is even slightly manageable.
The vision for this nonprofit is blooming, they are looking for people with various skill sets that would love to be a part of what they are doing. A social media manager, a webmaster, donations of furniture and a warehouse that would allow them to vastly expand and help many more people.
